The word religion literally means " The recognition of Allah's commands and of the duty pertaining to mankind to yield obedience to these: the recognition of the Divine Being the Whom obedience is due. "The other words for religion are Deen (din or millah or mazhab). The meaning of deen is "obedience and requital" and that of millah "to dictate", Mazhab derives its root from the word zahaba meaning "he went" and thus mazhab denotes "a way that one follows in respect of doctrines and practices in religion or an opinion respecting religion." The word Mazhab in Urdu or Persian also carries a wider significance of religion.
The word religion stands for " the religion of Islam. Islam has, all along, from Adam (peace be upon him) to the present day, been the only true religion of the mankind, and it will remain so till the Judgement-Day.
The Word Islam is an Arabic word and Arabic language being Umm-ul-Lisan (mother of all languages), this word assumes vast meaning. The word Islam means "mankind's complete obedience to Allah. Islam means and enjoins man's complete submission and obedience to Allah.... not merely in belief and mode of ibadat (worship), but in ethics and morality, in culture and social behavior, in politics and laws, in economic and social set-up, and in all the individual, national and international affairs of man alike. Islam, is a complete code of man's whole life. Being based on the nature of man, Islam is a comprehensive concept of life. it establishes firm relations between man and Allah and between man and man. It regulates both thought and action.
The word Islam is also means " entering into salm" and salm and silm both signify "peace"; both of these words are used in the sense of "peace" in the Quran. The name of Allah's deen as presented in the Quran is Islam and the name given to the people who follow Islam is Muslim. The root-meaning of the word Islam is "to enter into peace" and a Muslim is "one who is completely obedient to Allah" i.e. "obedient to the Quran and the Hadith."
